Five years after a mysterious supernatural presence led a large part of society to suicide, one of the survivors, Malorie Hayes (Sandra Bullock), and her two children desperately seek a way to save themselves downstream, in a small boat, towards a safe place.
One of the most recurring tense moments in the film is the need to venture out to find supplies or progress on their way to the safe place while blindfolded. To do this, Malorie devised a method to return to their starting point. This consisted of using a metal cord that allowed them to trace the path and always have a line to follow to return.
