New Study RS-Level Cancer Screenings Inadequate

Led by Dr. Stacey Fedewa of the American Cancer Society, a new study compiled the first population-based screening data across all 50 states and found that different states and regions screen for lung cancer at varied rates. The study stated the varied rates did not effectively correspond with each state's lung cancer burden. For instance, many of the states with the lowest levels of lung cancer deaths, such as New Hampshire and Vermont, employed the most screenings, whereas states with a high level of lung cancer deaths, such as West Virginia and Mississippi, utilized fewer screenings.

The study took place from 2016 to 2018, and during this time the frequency of lung cancer screenings increased in the US, but still did not reach what are considered adequate levels. Among its other key findings, the study suggested a strong connection between low cancer screening rates and the ability to access lung cancer screenings at cancer-care facilities. Lung cancer is the foremost cause of cancer-related deaths in the nation, and screenings were only given to 5 to 6 percent of eligible individuals nationwide.
