(ALIENS?!) HOW TO

LIGHTSHOW

More and more often you see pictures on Behance and Instagram that were taken at night and show an object that is illuminated from above by a light ring. Here is an example: (Source)
How to do this?

With this technique, you need a DSLR camera and a drone, as well as an object you want to photograph. The best time to take these photos is at blue hour or shortly after. In any case, it should still be somewhat bright to be able to focus on the object via DSLR. I went to my subject at night and had focus problems right away because I couldn't see anything.

Next, you need a bright flashlight that you fix under the drone. This will cover the drone's sensors and it will immediately complain that flying is not possible (FLY CAREFULLY!). Now you have to circle the drone over the object and make a long exposure with the camera. After several attempts the best settings go in this direction:
Exposure time: 30s
Aperture: f5. 6
ISO: 800
14MM
By the time I figured this out, the drone was empty and came back to me and had to make an emergency landing. For my photos, however, I did not use the upper settings, which I only found out afterwards, but these:

Exposure time: 30s
Aperture: f11
ISO:400
35MM

In my pictures you can clearly see that they are still too dark and, as already mentioned above, blurred, because I had focus problems in the dark. Next time it will be better!
Have you ever taken pictures like this before? Feel free to send them to me on Instagram @my_home_the_sky.
Tips are also welcome!
