Since early breast cancer detection is key for improving survival rates, all women are encouraged to conduct routine, at-home, manual screenings. However, women with moderate to elevated risk factors may be advised to get yearly mammograms, which provide an x-ray of the breast tissue. The American Cancer Society advises annual mammograms to begin at 40 years old. Women over 55 can consider having the procedure less frequently, and seniors with less than 10 years of life expectancy do not need to undergo mammograms.

Women with a family history of breast cancer or who have been exposed to chest radiation in their youth should also undergo an annual MRI test. Due to their higher risk, women in these categories should begin breast screenings by 30.
