I first learnt about Sunderlal Bahuguna and the 'Chipko movement' in my environmental studies text book as a child. But it truly only fascinates me now, that how a localised movement originating in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, became a rejuvenating point for many such non-violent protests in India, using age old Indian ideals of Satyagraha blended with the concept of ecofeminism, which were way ahead of their time. That one man became the reason for the way environmental movements took shape all over the world.
