Fragrance Bottle Designs
In the autumn of 2020, for our sophomore-year product sketching class, we were prompted to sketch out and ideate on some designs for a fragrance bottle.
For this project, I will be taking you through the process of my sketching and visualization design process as I draw out designs for some fragrance bottles.
Thumbnail Ideations
Coming up with a beginning concept was rather difficult for me as I originally took inspiration from various scents, existing bottle designs, and more to prompt my brain to come up with various forms to draw.
I prompted myself by coming up with evocative terms with very vivid imagery based off of scents (flowers), sensations (cold), and forms (constellations and waveforms).
However, the shapes and forms that were the most beautiful and striking to me were the forms stemming from astrology and space -- which is interesting since we don't know what space smells like :)
Below are some of my highlighted thumbnails from my space prompts: "Syzygy" and "The Sky Above" which are based off of orbitals and constellations accordingly.
Refined Sketches
From these thumbnail sketches, I chose three of the shapes that would be interesting to visualize and ideate further to create the following three bottles: Syzygy, Occlude, and Convergence.
I really liked this process since I was able to model various views such as exploded views, hero shots, close ups, details, etc. and show the various aspects of my bottles as I design and think about them!
Axis is my favorite bottle since I originally played with the idea of wanting merged forms before deciding to make it be a bottle that can house three separate fragrances/creams. I think that the form is really unique alongside its functionality as a three-in-one fragrance bottle!
Refinement Thumbnails
From here, I went to ideate on the various aspects of my bottles to refine it further. Thinking about the dispensing method, branding, materiality, etc. I did smaller thumbnails of lower fidelity to get out as many ideas as I could.

Taking the ideas from my thumbnail ideations, I came up with larger sketches showing various shots in order to showcase what these ideas may look like on my concept.
Future Work
This is one of my favorite projects, and I plan on continuing to sketch and ideate on this idea but in a digital manner. Additionally, I have hopes to make some CAD models in SolidWorks and renders in Keyshot to create some really stunning fragrance bottles to showcase at a higher fidelity later on!
