Survey data in physical dataviz murals

Life under curfew
A few months ago, I started working with Data4Change on a Data Stories Programme. Its objective was to help four civil society organisations in East Africa to collect, analyse and visualise their data in engaging ways. One of the organisations we worked with was the Social Justice Centre—a community-led movement in Kenya focused on justice and human rights violations. They had gathered data about the difficulties faced by their communities during the Covid 19 curfew. Once we were done cleaning and analysing this data, we decided to share it in an unusual way—by hosting an in-person data visualisation event in the Dandora informal settlement in Nairobi. Together with the amazing Surasti Puri we designed three dataviz murals for the locals to show solidarity, express their thoughts and grieve.
Watch a video of the event below.
Then, using the outcomes from the event, I created an interactive Shorthand story for the whole world to see.
