Preschool Nursery Rhyme Quilt

The completed quilt went through a few stages. I prepared squares for each child at our preschool, ages 6 weeks to 6 years old. The older they were, the more colorful and distinct the artwork. Infants dragged the marker across the fabric. I had the teachers tape down the fabric square for each child and instructed them to use the fabric markers and draw their favorite nursery rhyme, for those old enough to understand the concept. I was very pleased with the children's artwork, all very unique and colorful. Once each block was done, I began to sew them together and finally put all the pieces together in a checkerboard pattern. I left it open to reveal the back, as some of our kids colored both sides. It was really fun to see the preschooler's reaction to seeing the whole big quilt and their contribution. They would ask me, "which one is mine", and go through naming all their friends as I pointed to each one.
Working at a preschool is a lot of fun. Our Fall Children’s Art Show had Nursery Rhymes as our theme. I decided that I wanted to make a quilt with art made by our students and this was that project. This was my sample square to test out the fabric markers, with one of my favorite nursery rhymes: Winken, Blynken, and Nod.
