Dec,1,2020: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lives of many worldwide and Ontario is no exception. Episode one of COVID Impact 2020 is a human-interest newscast that touches on the ongoing pandemic and its impact on different communities across the province. This first episode has a variety of segments that touch on consumers, students, athletes and drag communities.
With the holidays around the corner, our first segment investigates how shopping will look different this year due to ongoing social distancing and store capacity regulations. A general manager at Cadillac Fairview Rideau Centre shares how the mall aims to keep people safe when shopping. The pandemic is also pushing some to support small businesses.
The pandemic has not only changed shopping, but also student life since beginning in March. The sudden shift to online school has caused stress for many university students. In this segment, students share their views and feelings on this topic.
And as universities needed to adapt, so did its organized U Sports. With increasing limitations put into place, coaches express the need to motivate players and keep team spirit alive, something that was easier prior to the pandemic.
Elementary and high school students have also needed to adapt to either fully or partially learn online. However, these virtual alternatives pose technology challenges that could put Indigenous students at a disadvantage, experts explain.
