Statement of Intent - Brutalism in Guernsey – Observation Tower MP4
I am fascinated by the architectural brutalism of the concrete buildings on the Southbank in London. Guernsey has its own concrete monoliths, but these echo the brutality of war. Built by the forces which invaded this corner of the British Isles during WWII they remain a stark reminder on the landscape.
The audience for this set of photos is the TZFM201 course team and students and I intend the audience to feel surprise, sadness and curiosity, as we remember the forced labour used to build them.
These six architectural photographs have a primarily documentary approach, although they could have some commercial and fine art value.
I will capture the photos in reasonably harsh sunlight in order to accentuate the texture and form, using a horizontal format to show the place in the landscape and vertical format, accepting some element of converging verticals, to accentuate the sense of height. The images will be shown in black and white and modestly enhanced to bring out the texture and harshness, the brutalism, whilst retaining a general sense of realism.
