Day of The Dead - Lighted Paper Costume

Day of The Dead
Lighted Paper Costume
PROJECT BRIEF

Problem: In this project we would work collaboratively in teams of five. The guidelines were to take a 1980’s song and modify the lyrics as inspiration to construct a costume that was “larger than life”! The character had to be made out of paper alone and incorporate a laser cut plastic element . We also had to include three illuminated  elements within the final construction. Finally our modified song lyrics, choreography and final design were presented as a performance for students and faculty at SCAD. This was a judged competition where our team won first place!

Solution: We each had particular roles within the execution of the project. We landed on Abba’s song “Dancing Queen” and during brainstorming of our concepts, I came up with the theme of “Day of the Dead '' from a recent trip to Mexico. As a team we then came up with the various elements by sketching different aspects of the design. We also incorporated 2 shadow puppets that surprised the audience in an interactive light show, this took place under the skirt of the skeleton during our performance.

Design & Technical Focus: My primary focus was to design and laser cut the skull head, ensuring that it fit the overall composition and theme of the costume. I also had to construct how we would attach it to the model. All attachments had to be made with tape alone. I also spent time constructing the tissue paper flowers, the skirt, attached lighting and constructed the paper base that our model would stand on (over 7ft tall).
