In anticipation of the new movie a little under a year way, I'd like to share my take on the Star Wars Episode 7 poster. Luke's legendary Lightsaber, lost in the sands of Tatooine has been battered and weathered by the harsh desert climate while it waits for its master to come and reclaim it.
I modeled the Lightsaber and landscape in Cinema 4D and rendered it out with the Physical Renderer. I then brought the scene into Photoshop for some compositing, detail enhancement, color grading and film grain/distress effects.
