Penguin Science Fact

Science Fact was a fictional book series published by penguin, in which I designed three of its book covers. The initial visuals for these covers were inspired by vintage science diagrams. This was communicated through the use of traditional type faces, central layouts and off white stock.

The most distinctive part of this design was the way in which each bellyband interacted with the cover underneath. Part of each design was printed onto tracing paper, which was then inserted into circular openings. This use of tracing paper allowed me to essentially layer multiple images on top of each other, allowing for the formation of additional information.

The notion of layering in order to form new visuals communicates the idea that something can be examined from multiple angles. In the world of science nothing is ever as it seems.
