Sh*t Nicas Say Lettering Series

Hello and welcome to my "Sh*t Nicas Say" series!

My home country of Nicaragua is a paradisal
Central American land with beautiful flora and fauna, colorful people, and rich culture. Here I explore common Nicaraguan idioms using a variety of mediums.

No Jodás

Literal translation: Don't fuck
Actual meanings: No way, yeah right, fuck off

"¡No jodás!" is a multifunction exclamation that is evoked when one is feeling/expressing surprise, disbelief, disapproval, or defensiveness. This phrase has a wide array of uses and is employed freely in the Nica language, so the tone used when voicing this expression is a crucial element, for it will determine its playfulness or severity.

Oe

The Nicaraguan equivalent of "Yo" or "Hey." This term can be used to say hello, grab someone's attention, or express surprise.

Te Pica el Culo

Literal translation: Your butthole is itchy.
Actual meaning: You trippin'. What is the matter with you?

This phrase is used when someone says or does something ridiculous.

"Me debés 100 pesos." (You owe me 100 pesos.)
"Te pica el culo."

De humo

The Nicaraguan version of "fo' shizzle."

"Nos vamos a ir en ella?" (Are we going ham tonight?)
"De humoooo!"

Parecés buena cosa

Used when someone who you thought was a goody two-shoes is actually a party animal or does something unexpectedly "bad."

Qué es la verga?

Literal translation: What the d*ck?

This is the sassy way of asking, "what is your problem?"

"Sos feo." (You ugly.)
"Y qué es la verga?!"

Sólo mate sos

Meaning: You're full of shit.
This exclamation is used in response to outrageous claims and anecdotes, which are quite commonplace in Nicaragua.

"Soy responsable ahora."
"Sólo mate sos!!"
