Part III of a triptych - We Dream of Blue Whales. A map made in response to a residency mapping whales with oceanographers across 1300 miles of the North Atlantic. As part of the crew, I sailed on a 22 metre sailing boat from Reykjavik in Iceland to Gothenburg in Sweden via Torshavn in the Faeroes. Originally the map was to be purely about whales but in the end became about travellers' tales in general.
All of the stories written down were heard by me at some point over the month long journey and like all travellers' tales, it is hard to say whether they were all true or only partly true. We saw so few whales that, in our heads, they were almost as mythical as the sea monsters that inhabit the travellers' tales of old.
I finally came close to a real blue whale at the end of the journey - stuffed and displayed at Gothenburg Natural History Museum.
