In my downtime over the last few months Ive been working on a new series of illustrated maps based on fictional places from iconic movies and TV shows. Here is some process work on the first one – Camp Crystal Lake from the Friday the 13th movies. Camp Crystal Lake is the camp and surrounding woods where hockey-masked horror movie villain Jason Voorhees lives.

I didn't want to make a literal map, I wanted to do something that really exaggerates the area and represents what the films are about. So my concept was to treat all the paths and roads in the area to connect and look like a chalk outline of a body, then the lake in the middle would look like a pool of blood.

Sketches for this project are all pretty similar because I had the idea for the paths and lake doubling as a body and blood before I started. Pretty much dove right into Illustrator to start building assets and laying out the map. I watched a few of the first few movies in the Friday the 13th series and took notes on locations and places mentioned like Pakanack Lodge and Higgens Haven. I wanted this map to really appeal to the hardcore fans so I also added things like the RV, Eternal Peace Cemetery and River to NYC as references from the later films.
