Book Design Series
This was a self lead project to create a three book series. The only design confines I received was that the books had to be about a one mile journey and one book had to explore typography only, one image only and one image and type in combination.
I walked one mile along the beach of Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary in Dartmouth MA and recorded the journey in the three books.
The walk can only be completed during low tide for which I solved in various ways.
Book one – Typography only
Content walks the user through the entire mile journey through calling out landmarks and features. The wheel represents all 12 months and the low tide time on each day. Users turn the wheel to see when the next low tide will be. There are three wheels which would only need to be changed three times a year with a simple brass pin.
Book two – Image only
This solution included a combination of books. One book included images of each step and feature of the walk. The other book was used to decode the low tides each day of the year as seen below.
Book three – typography & image
In the third book I explored combining images with typography. I both walked the reader through the experience by listing out each feature as well as showing each feature of the journey.
This book has an element of being tactile, I gathered artifacts from the journey and pasted them onto the cover which helps immerse the reader into the journey. In addition, I explored layers and moving through the book literally, through cutouts.
