RESEARCH

Looking at books and magazine

Within this week we have been researching what makes a photo book and what qualities are needed to create one.
Here is a photobook by Kane Hulsa, Havana. This photobook depicts the areas of cuba from the people and residents to architecture and street life. Here are few of my favourite photos below. The layout of the book is landscape and all the images are placed of white backgrounds
SECOND SHOOT

Location : Rokit London

Equipment :

canon 600d
50mm 1.8 lens
flashgun
After editing down the photographs on Capture One, I started to experiment with levels to sharpen the photographs and to emphasise the texture of the material.
These are the final outcomes
After having feedback I was told to stay away from taking photographs that might discourage customers from shopping at second stores.
DON MCCULLIN EXHIBITION

Born in 1935, McCullin is known for his war photograph and street life, leaving school at 15 he joined the RAF as a photography assistant, he was soon commissioned by newspapers to document the war in other countries.
There were many rooms filled McCullin's work they depicted sadness and hardship as he photographed living conditions of the people surviving in wars and how it had an impact on them and what they had lost.

His work was divided into a timeline starting from the very beginning stages of being a photographer to the different wars he has gone to.

The work that caught my eye the most was was the civil war in Bangladesh, it had got to me the most as my family back then were in the army during this time and were freedom fighters.
After the exhibition I had a look at the books and photo books of the exhibition and decided to purchase this one.
The photo book depicts all the photographs his war photography to his street life within minimal typography. The book is A5 and is paperback, when going through the book the photographs are evenly spaced out so it is not distracting to the eye.
BOOKSHOP H/W

The the first book I found was The East End In Colour 1960-1980 by David Granick. The book is from Hoxton mini Press, it is a landscape A5 hardback book. Inside the book the photos are displayed on there own on one page or put together like below if the images were similar, with hardly any text.
Another book I had found was by Mihaela Noroc, her book depicts women around the world and what is beauty to themselves or what is considered to be beautiful in their country. There were two copies of this book, one in paperback in A5 in paperback and and copy in hardback in A4. The photographs are both portraits and landscapes with minimal text explaining what is in the photograph.
The final book I had picked up was by Laurence Stephens and it was about the annoying tourists that explore the city. This is also another book Hoxton mini Press and is a A5 portrait sized book, the inside a had flap inside along with back and the cover was matte. Much like the other photobooks, the photographs are spaced out evenly but without any text.
