This is a video I made for The Swedish Rural Network. The assignment was to do a report on the concept Youngagement. It's a concept that will inspire rural youth to be involved in their own rural communities. This was a really fun project but there was some challenges to meet.

 

Travel

The event took place in Gällivare far north in Sweden. Thats 1500 km from were I live. This was the first time I had to fly with my equipment and because it was just domestic I had a weight problem. I needed to think carefully what I wanted to have in my carry on and what I would put in my suitcase. I chose to put the equipment that I desperately needed for completing the job in the carry on which is a Lowepro Flipside 400. One camera, some lenses, some sound equipment and my Swedish chameleon rig. That is all I needed for making a video. In the suitcase I put my tripod, my Glidecam hd 2000, some more microphones and my big 75-200 lens.

 

Nice cameramovement

I really wanted to bring my Kessler pocketdolly but because of the travel situation it was to difficult. Instead I brought my Glidecam hd 2000 for some smooth camera movements. The problem with that solution was my lack of experience. For me it's hard to get the nice and smooth movement with a glidcam. But I made an attempt, and filming in 50 fps with my 7D I could slow it down and make it more forgiving.

 

Light

I don't own any lights, there was no room in the budget for renting and no room in my bags either. There was quite a good amount of light in the localities but when I did the interviews just one light would have made the shot so much better.

 

Subtitle

My client was very happy with the outcome and they gave me an additional assignment to make an english subtitle version. That was new for me. They did the translating but I had to get it in the video. I made a template in Motion 4. I had to test it quite a few times to get it right with the thickness, blur and opacity of the outlines. But the hardest was to time it so it would feel good. I'm still not 100 % happy with the result but it's ok.
