Infographic of molecular tools in archaeological and biological research
on the Atlantic walrus
Process of creating the infographic:
I started this infographic with a simple sketch of a walrus tooth in the center with the isotopic research mentioned in the book’s overview around it. I did not know the details of the research. The most difficult part was to put the source, the process, and the result of the research together. The outcome of the communication after several interactions you can see below. When the picture became clear I started to elaborate every piece of it further. I drew the animal cell, which took me some time. I tried to color it with gradients but it became unclear and I left only flat colors. I highlighted the nucleus and mitochondrion only because it was particularly important for the research. After that, I drew isotopes and fatty acid, the skull of the extinct walrus and a piece of the walrus skin with blubber. I made a pencil drawing of the tooth, but when I placed it in the layout, it was looking very different from the other pieces and I had to redraw it using the vector technique.
Eventually, I placed all pieces together in the layout to present it to the group of authors which allowed them to give me real feedback. The authors made some corrections in the illustrations and the text, but the general reaction was positive. The challenging part of this infographic was to combine together a lot of text, illustrations in different graphic styles, and blocks with the information. In the end, I tried different compositions and I found the best possible way to display the information and keep it readable.
Final result of the infographic:
