English Program at Stanford University
Dr. Heather Knight, former president of Pacific Union College, is one of the first African-American females to serve as an administrator at higher education institutions around the country. Before her trailblazing career, Dr. Heather Knight earned her Ph.D. in English at one of the country’s premier institutions, Stanford University.

Stanford University is known for its ability to attract and retain some of the most brilliant scholars around the world, but its English degree programs prepare students for a number of careers after college.

The degree program focuses on two areas in educations: exposing students to a well-rounded course of study and focusing on critical thinking skills. Students enrolled in both graduate and undergraduate programs will find they might be studying works from British, American, and World History. However, the close reading is the backdrop to students honing their critical thinking skills. By examining the language in the given texts, students are challenged to discover hidden meanings in literature.

The program offers students at all levels a few options in tracks of study. In addition to pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees, students can choose a co-terminal degree, which will allow undergraduates to take graduate courses as a part of their degree program and in preparation for graduate school. The program also offers a digital humanities degree, which prepares students to work in new media and use technological and computational tools.
