TERRADOS – Con vistas al cielo

Final Degree Project – Spatial Design

With a world increasingly open to the act of social distancing, all of our public and private spaces will begin to change according to our new needs of safety and well-being.

Sometimes we won’t be able to change our already built-environments, but what if we could redesign some of them into safer spaces where to spend our time in-between these public and private interactions? And furthermore, what if those spaces would not only provide us with the privacy that we’re seeking, but they would also be a paradigm shift in regards to well-being as something exclusive to be experienced every day?

‘Terrados’ aims to provide Barcelona’s citizens with special locations that will allow us to disconnect from our everyday routines. A net of installations scattered over the city’s rooftops that will enhance what’s already been there for years and, most importantly, will help us reconnect with ourselves and with the environment surrounding us. These spaces will host an experience that seeks to create moments of ‘being alone in public’, all whilst playing with our senses through biophillic design techniques specially curated for each installation, thus ensuring our experience of the contemplative act of taking care of our inner well-being.

and infinite possible outcomes this places and interventions can have.

Photo series that resulted key to the project: The aim was to show the beauty of the aging of the location. It ended up defining the spaces' lighting: rounded mirrors were set up facing some of the Terrados' original walls so that during specific moments of certain days the sunlight would reflect on them and highlight elements such as the patina or cracks, thus making the visitors conscious about the act of occupying a space that was already there before them. Making the best of what already exists.

'But I think this pandemic has taught us that we need more places to get away," he explained.

'City centres should not be defined by their real-estate, but rather by their real escape. By possibilities that allow us to escape to nature," he continued.
