Locations Documentary Short [2019]

Project: locations documentary short
Role: director, video editor, production manager
Year: 2019
The Ruins is an extra which formed part of the UK and German physical releases of the cult classic: The Blood on Satan's Claw. The aim of this short documentary was to take the audience on a historical journey into the ruins of a church in Oxfordshire, England, which had served as the backdrop to one of the main locations in the film. I wore most hats in this production, taking on the  roles of production manager, editor and director.
I dug deep on Google to understand the church's long and transformative history, from the time of the Norman conquest to the present day. During my research I stumbled upon Dr Stephen Mileson, who had written recent academic papers about the ruins, as well as leading architectural digs in the area. I got him to agree to an interview and arranged to film this on the site of the ruins.
During my visits to the ruins I filmed lots of cutaways of the old church and surrounding countryside. On one occasion a representative from the parish church visited and he agreed to an interview about the significance of the site to the local community. I feel his input to my documentary helped bridge the historical information to the present day.
I would have loved to have arranged an interview with somebody that had been involved with the 1970 production. But it was still a nice extra that allows you to appreciate the unique film location.
As somebody who has more experience in post-production, it was a very meaningful project for me. I enjoyed taking ownership of the documentary and discovering how it would all pan out. It was a great opportunity to try my hands at directing, something I want to do more of in the future.
