Adam Schwarze's profile

What Are Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure Operations?

Adam Schwarze is a Honolulu, Hawaii-based US Navy SEAL officer who has been with the Navy since 2012, prior to which he spent a decade as an infantryman with the US Marine Corps. Early in his career as a Navy SEAL, Adam Schwarze participated in five months of visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) operations with Seal Team Three.

A term used by law enforcement and military agencies in the US, VBSS refers to maritime boarding actions to combat the trafficking of illegal drugs and arms as well as terrorism, and piracy. It can also refer to missions designed to capture enemy vessels or conduct customs and safety inspections. Given their extensive training and capabilities in maritime special operations, Navy SEALs are typically commissioned for VBSS. However, Marine Raiders, Army Green Berets, Reconnaissance Marines, and the Coast Guard's Maritime Security Response Teams have been selected to carry out VBSS as well.

VBSS operations involve an approach/insertion phase and a close-quarters battle phase. The former is led by Special Warfare Combatant Craft crewmembers, who direct assault teams to particular targets and manage any additional challenges while these teams clear enemy vessels. Onboard target vessels, assault teams engage in a combat scenario that might take hours to clear, depending on the type and size of the ships.
