Here are the sketches for the spot illustrations created for The Clothing Dilemma. The article was talking about us as consumers, brands, their ethics and materials used. As a consumer of cycling clothing, I understand the importance of a good piece of kit. It's all too easy to go for the cheaper option, get yourself a £20 marmite jersey and ride around in that. But a hardworking bit of kit is so much more valuable. This was a big part of the initial sketch process for me and was at the forefront of my mind while designing the first three sketches. Enric, the art director at Rouleur, went with option one. I personally like the second sketch, from an illustrators perspective, but no.1 communicates the message clearly.
For the second spot, the focus was on materials. The article talks about down feathers, cotton, bamboo and other plant based mediums. I thought about the thread that is stitched throughout clothes navigating the materials, or drawing something positive. Enric went with the second sketch, but we later changed the earth to a leaf (shown above) as it communicated the idea of green practices better.
