US Government Shutdown | Typography Project

This project that began in early January was based around the idea of designing a parody-based warning error that would appear on any computer screen currently in use by the President of the United States, in the event of a government shutdown, by presenting the government itself as a desktop application that requires immediate tending to.

As you will see, the final outcome consists of a menu that is based around the style of a digital user interface that was industry standard during the mid to late 1980s, this is because a more modern and up-to-date user interface itself would be too aesthetically pleasing and a huge distraction towards the situation in hand.

Also included are other basic text-orientated effects, such as different point sizes, combined letter cases, set colour choices, and certain levels of opacity to help with asserting hierarchy where it is respectively necessary.

One other inclusion is that of three five-pointed vector stars being placed above the application name in order to make a subtle gesture towards the United States flag, as this helps signify a moderate level of patriotism and familiarity for the viewer (the president), considering how big of a political matter the situation is for the entire country and it’s people.

For the display mockup, I decided to place the final outcome onto a MacBook screen that is then rested up against a backdrop that shares the same colour as the dominant colour of the final outcome itself, as this helps ensure that both elements blend together in a calm yet formal manner that isn’t too distracting, or make one seem out of place from the other.
