Ken Wessel's profile

FMA Conducts Safety Assessment Studies

Residing in Florida, Ken Wessel led Wessel Fragrances for two decades and guided its successful sale to Takasago International Corporation in 2008. Serving on the Fragrance Materials Association (RIFM) board of directors for more than three decades, Ken Wessel received a plaque for his consistent efforts with the organization in 2008.

RIFM has a vital role in ensuring that fragrance materials are safe for human use and do not present environmental risks. In September 2019, the organization authored a safety assessment published in Food and Chemical Toxicology and found that the substance methyl 2-octanoate, associated with contact dermatitis was safe for cosmetics within prescribed dosages.

In completing assessments through a testing cascade, RIFM employs advanced technologies such as BlueScreen HC as part of its genotoxicity profiling regime. This was designed to provide expedited assessment of potential hazards across a broad range of chemical collections. This attribute is particularly important when evaluating new chemicals as product development candidates. The evaluation method centers on the key gene GADD45a and its response to chemicals that can interfere with DNA.
